Swelling Behavior and Flow Rates of a Novel Hydrophilic Gasket Used in Composite Geomembrane Vertical Cutoff Walls and Infrastructures Exposed to Contaminated Groundwater

The swelling capacity of novel hydrophilic gaskets used in geomembrane cutoff walls and infrastructures is critical for decreasing the flow rates contaminated groundwater. This study investigated behavior, relaxation characteristics, rates, micro-morphology a gasket with different testing liquids. radial tests were performed using device modified from single-lever consolidation instrument. A model apparatus was manufactured employed to measure poor-sealing gasket. According test results, ratio soaked DIW highest, followed by NaCl solution, MSW landfill leachate, CaCl2 solution. Relaxation phenomena appeared all specimens regardless penetrated DIW, NaCl, decreased stable state, then increased extremely slowly values. Moreover, self-healing observed. indicated that sodium polyacrylate (PAAS) insufficient expansion could separate matrix under high multivalent ionic strength or loading pressure conditions. Therefore, it develop resistance groundwater better barrier performance use sites infrastructures.
